Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
