Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The true challenge confronting the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
